The world's energy consumption from all sources is increasing. The Energy Institute (EI) has released its annual World Energy Statistical Review, which, for the first time, presents comprehensive global energy data for 2023. The analysis showed that:
● Total primary energy consumption reached an all-time high, increasing by 2% compared to 2022. Fossil fuel consumption also rose a record 1.5%, with coal consumption up 1.6% and oil up 2%, while gas consumption was unchanged. These resources accounted for 81.5% of total consumption (82% in 2022).
● Renewable energy production (excluding hydropower) increased by 13% to a global record of 4.75 TWh. This growth is almost entirely driven by wind and solar, accounting for 74% of all additional electricity generated. RES accounts for 8% (or 15%, including hydrogen generation) of energy consumption.
● Due to the war in Ukraine, gas demand in Europe fell by 7% after a previous drop of 13% in 2022. The share of Russian gas in EU imports fell to 15% from 45% in 2021, and LNG imports to Europe overtook pipeline gas for the second year.
The new all-time high electricity consumption in Russia was set on July 5, the System Operator company said on its official Telegram channel. "According to System Operator’s data. The new maximal level of electric power consumption during the extremely high temperature period was achieved in the Unified Energy System of Russia on July 5 at 02:00 p.m. Moscow time [11:00 a.m. GMT].," the company said. The historical summer maximum totaled 137,224 MW, which is 3,125 MW higher than the previous summer consumption maximum registered on August 7, 2023, the System Operator noted. The new record of power consumption was set against the average ambient air temperature of plus 23.6 degrees Celsius.
Large-scale disruptions in the operation of the Russian energy system occurred on July 16 in the south and east of the country, according to reports from the Ministry of Energy, local authorities and energy companies. During the day, a failure occurred in the operation of generating equipment at the Rostov Nuclear Power Plant, the ministry reported. Because of this, temporary restrictions on electricity consumption in the southern Russian power grid were introduced by 1.5 GW to "maintain the stability of the power grid under conditions of increased loads." At 17:00 Moscow time, the Ministry of Energy reported that as a result of "prompt actions to optimize the network operating mode," the volume of temporary restrictions in the southern power grid was reduced by 500 MW.
