VK, Yandex, Sberbank and Rostelecom will establish a company that will develop a mobile operating system based on the Android open source code, Kommersant wrote, citing a government source.
Russia already has its own mobile OS from Rostelecom - Aurora, to which they wanted to transfer Russians and even spend RUB480bn on it until 2030. Aurora will remain an OS for the public sector and officials with increased security requirements, the new OS will be aimed at the consumer segment.
Despite being based on Android, the Russian "civilian" OS will not be a simple shell - it will replace the entire set of deeply integrated Google Mobile Services (GMS). However, domestic alternatives to Google Play, Gmail, Google Map, YouTube and Chrome already exist - this is the RuStore application store launched by VK, Mail.ru mail, maps and the Yandex browser, respectively. Therefore, the development of the OS should cost several times cheaper than Aurora and will fit within one year, experts say.
In fact, the Russian authorities went the way of the Chinese Huawei. Cut off from her partnership with Google in 2018, she even briefly looked at Aurora. But in the end, it created Harmony OS based on the free Android code and built its own ecosystem of half abn users around the AppGallery app store and Huawei Mobile Service (HMS).
It would be easiest for Russian developers to immediately agree with Huawei on the use of its mobile development libraries in RuStore, a source in the mobile development market told Kommersant.
