The US bought more Russian nuclear fuel, fertiliser and platinum this year than in 2021. In Jan-Oct, the US paid Russia $644mn for nuclear fuel, $1.3bn for fertilisers and $1bn for palladium. US imports of these Russian goods are worth ~$3bn.
The United States imported $732.4mn worth of goods from Russia in October. This is 2.2 times more than in September ($332.1mn), and the maximum in monetary terms over the past five months, RBC reports citing data from the US Census Bureau. (Census Bureau). Deliveries from Russia to the United States have actually been reduced to nuclear fuel, mineral fertilisers and platinum group metals, which are not under sanctions. Shipments of iron, steel and aluminium to the US totaled just $1.1mn in October.
Imports of enriched uranium (uranium fluoride) in October reached $184.7mn, the highest since November 2016, when it was $236.5mn. In September 2022, there were no deliveries of uranium from Russia, according to US customs statistics. The supply of uranium depends on the needs of the United States and on the possibilities of logistics, a source in the Russian nuclear industry explained.
According to the results of ten months, Russia accounts for a quarter of enriched uranium supplies to the United States, all imports - $644mn. From Russia, enriched uranium is supplied by Rosatom's foreign trade company Techsnabexport (trademark - TENEX). It is the only company in the world that is engaged in the commercial sale of HALEU-type uranium with an enrichment level of up to 20%. Most reactors for nuclear power plants use uranium enriched up to 5%. American companies are now developing next-generation nuclear reactors that will run on HALEU.
Deliveries of Russian mineral fertilisers to the US in October were 10% higher
