As a result, town halls in Scottish cities have stopped paying for Ukrainians to live in hotels. Last year, Germany allocated €50M to improve housing conditions for internally displaced persons from eastern Ukraine. The corresponding initiative provided affordable long-term rental housing.
Support is growing in Ukraine for surrendering territory to Russia in exchange for an end to the fighting, according to an opinion poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in December. It found that 19 per cent of Ukrainians would now accept such a move. The figure has almost doubled since May.
Ukrainians tired of 'state propaganda.' Once described as a "weapon" by President Volodymyr Zelensky, many Ukrainians after nearly two years of war say they are getting tired of the government-backed Telemarathon broadcasted 24/7, the New York Times reported on Jan. 3. Oksana Romaniuk, chief of the Kyiv-based Institute of Mass Information, called it state propaganda, saying “Everyone is fed up with this picture that says, We’re winning, everyone likes us and gives us money."
The first 11 months of 2023 saw over 32 million border crossings in Ukraine, with only a 1% difference between the number of departures and returns, the open data platform OpenDataBot reported on Jan. 3, citing data from the Ukrainian Border Guard.
Since the start of the war, 32% fewer children have been born in Ukraine.
In 2023 187,300 children were born, which is 32% less than before the start of the full-scale invasion. 273,700 babies were born in 2021, and 206,000 were born in the first year of the invasion (-25%). In general, a decrease in the birth rate has been observed in Ukraine since 2013, by 6-7% every year. From 2010 to 2013, about 500,000 children were born in Ukraine annually.
