trader’s top manager, recalled that in 2023, USAID helped Nibulon purchase 50 hopper cars. This allowed the agricultural holding to significantly improve its transportation economy during July-December due to an increase in the share of wagons used, from 10% to 23%. The economic impact that was redistributed to the purchase price paid to farmers amounted to $1.7M. To scale the impact on the entire elevator network of Nibulon complexes, 250 additional cars are needed. It is noted that the increase in the supply of wagons from Ukrainian Railways and their provision from donors will make it possible to reduce logistics costs on the Danube, delivering a positive economic component for all agricultural exporters.
The trade of metal products between Ukraine and Turkey has changed since the beginning of the war. In 2022, due to the consequences of the war in Ukraine, there was a shortage of certain types of metal products, and Turkish rolling stock partially filled some empty niches in the market. In the period between the pre-war year 2021 and 2023, Turkey increased its supply to the Ukrainian market of the following types of metal products: hot-rolled rolled products - to 155,800 tons; cold-rolled steel - to 53,200 tons; shaped rolled steel - to 46,000 tons; pipes - to 29,800 tons. Among other significant types of metal products, a 41%, or 45,400 ton, decrease in Ukraine’s import of Turkish fittings from 2021 through 2023 was observed. However, these supplies also increased last year by 56% compared to 2022. According to 2023’s results, Turkish steel imports accounted for about 40% of all foreign supplies of metal products to Ukraine. At the same time, the supply of Ukrainian mining and metallurgical sector products to the Turkish market from 2021 to 2023 decreased by 90%.
Ukraine increased imports of rolled steel by 93%. According to the results of 2023, the import of flat-rolled steel products increased by 93.2% compared to 2022 - up to 908,200 tons. China, Turkey, and Poland were the largest suppliers of flat-rolled products. The sharp increase in imported steel is associated with the destruction of the Mariupol metallurgical plants, which specialized in producing flat-rolled products.
