company Guaranteed Buyer reduced its debts to green generation by 15%, or ₴5.8B (₴37.6B to ₴31.8B) as of the start of February. Over the past year, the level of settlements with RES energy producers is 71.2%.
Ukraine will have 12 biomethane plants in two years. Despite the war, a biomethane plant was put into operation in 2023, and a second one, which will also have significant capacity, is being prepared for launch this year. It is noted that 10 more plants are expected to be launched in the next two years, which will significantly contribute to biomethane production, said the deputy minister of Energy of Ukraine.
Ukraine launched over 660 MW of new RES capacity in two years.
According to Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko, Ukrainian energy companies built about 312 MW of new RES capacity in 2022 and almost 350 MW in 2023. These figures include solar, wind, biogas, and small hydropower plants. Despite the loss of 80% of wind farms and 20% of SPPs due to the war, their share in Ukraine's energy mix remains significant. In 2023, wind and solar power plants produced approximately 10% of Ukraine’s electricity. The large hydropower plants' share of clean energy production reached 20.3%, more than in the pre-war period. Ukraine’s Energy Strategy, which was adopted last year, is to continue to pursue the course of clean energy production. “As early as 2030, the share of RES in the energy balance should be at least 25%, and by 2050, Ukraine should achieve climate neutrality," Halushchenko noted.
The Ukrainian Parliament will close the legislative gap that is slowing the start of biomethane export. The government will adopt a draft to create technical opportunities to export biomethane from Ukraine. The document provides that customs control and customs clearance of biomethane will be carried out in the manner provided for natural gas. Ukraine now has 77 biogas plants with a capacity of up to 260 million cubic metres of fuel per year, which can be processed into almost 150 million cubic metres of biomethane.
9.1.11 Metallurgy & mining sector news
The rapid recovery has supported Ukraine's metallurgical industry: Rolled steel consumption increased by 20%. The main trend in the consumption of rolled metal in 2023 was the intensification of construction and reconstruction of infrastructure, energy shelters, and an increase in the reconstruction of destroyed housing.
The consumption of metal products in Ukraine increased by more than 119%. According to 2023’s results, Ukraine increased its consumption of metal products (rolled and semi-finished products) by 119.3% compared to 2022 - up to 3.506 million tons. 1.12 million tons of metal products were imported into Ukraine, which is 79.9% more than in 2022. Import supplies made up 31.9% of the domestic retail market.
Ukraine has increased its steel production by almost 400%, and despite the sanctions, Russia is still managing to produce significant volumes of this product. Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises increased steel production by 390% in December 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, to 520,000 tons from 106,000 tons, but output decreased compared to the previous month by 4.8%, when 546,000 tons were smelted. At the same time, Ukraine retained the 21st place in the ranking of 71 countries that are global producers of this
