Ukraine is Germany’s biggest arms buyer. In the first three quarters of this year, Germany approved the export of military equipment to Ukraine worth €3.3bn euros, making Kyiv the largest recipient of German weapons, according to the country's Ministry of Economy According to the ministry, in 2022, German arms exports totalled €8.35bn euros, while in the first three quarters of this year, they already amounted to 8.76bn euros. This is the second highest figure in German history. Only in 2021 was it higher, amounting to 9.35bn euros. For comparison, during the 16 years of Chancellor Angela Merkel's rule, the six-billion mark was exceeded only five times.
Western military powers are running out of ammunition to give Ukraine to defend itself against Russia's full-scale invasion, the UK and Nato have warned. Adm Rob Bauer, Nato's most senior military official, told the Warsaw Security Forum that "the bottom of the barrel is now visible". He said governments and defence manufacturers now had to "ramp up production in a much higher tempo".
US military 'ready to deliver' cluster-armed ATACMS. Rheinmetall to deliver Estonian mobile drone surveillance systems to Ukraine. Rheinmetall has received an order "in the two-digit million-euro range" from the German government to supply Ukraine with mobile drone surveillance systems, the arms manufacturer announced on Oct. 5.
Scholz pledges another Patriot system to Ukraine. Germany will send Ukraine another Patriot air defence system "to help ward off aerial and drone attacks during the coming winter months," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Oct. 5.
Slovakia stops military aid to Ukraine, and Germany delays the supply of the Taurus, but Ukraine’s other partners plan further support. The President of Slovakia, Zuzana Chaputova, opposed the provision of military aid to Ukraine because of the victory in the parliamentary elections of the populist party Smer-SD, which rejected support for Ukraine. Also, according to Bild, the German government does not plan to supply long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine "in the near future". Instead, Germany is considering an additional supply of Patriot missiles. Meanwhile, Lithuania plans to include €340M (0.4% of GDP) in support for Ukraine in its expenditures as part of their 2024 budget. The government of Norway will increase its defence budget for 2024 by $1.7B to $10.2B. They want to send part of the funds (7.5B crowns) as military aid to Ukraine. At the same time, the US will speed up production of the most common 155-mm artillery projectile in Ukraine up to 100,000 per month (currently 28,000). It is noteworthy that the US handed over to Ukraine over a million cartridges confiscated from Iran.
