Sensible light
Light is emphatically the most powerful artistic modality in all forms of interior design. Human photobiological preferences are genetically coded and our eyes are always attracted by bright lights. Further variations between luminous and shaded areas add an appreciated dynamic to our perception of space. Multiple light levels give a distinct psychological presence that is even further enhanced if they are adjustable. Ergonomically sound lighting is emotionally satisfying but the lamps themselves should never be plainly visible. Human eyes are sensitive to the slightest disruptions of luminosity and the natural visual feld must be left unimpeded.
Artifcial illumination is always a poor substitute for natural sunshine and there is an abundance of cheap but inadequate light sources. High quality lighting gear is mostly used by professional designers and easily gets quite expensive. Many hesitate at the cost, but the health benefts will soon outweigh the initial investment. Creative offce staff and bright school children will soon be living testimonials of sound illumination. Everyday light is certainly a medicine of the future and the expert of phototherapy should also be able to guide clients in the choice of ergonomic lamps and fttings.
But solar light imitations are more than mere limitations. Advanced electrical luminaries can actually enable a wider projection range than natural daylight. Beams can be pinpointed into a minute focus – colouration of all possible kinds can be supplied – instant dimming and screening is feasible – pulsations and modulations are quite simple – ultraviolet and infrared and polarization can be included. The creative possibilities are quite surprising but excessive use of high tech can easily disrupt the biological rhythms of eye and brain and soul.
