Gian Berto Vanni. Opere dal 1950 al 1977, Galleria Nuovo Carpine, Rome, May 1977
This painting created during
Josef Albers' courses is perhaps the one that comes closest to pure abstraction among all Vanni painted in his career. Despite that he said he had been informed for these profiles by the silhouettes of New York's rooftops and the evocative title, we are faced with a poetic that excludes any external reference to validate his own expression. The real conceptual inspiration, underlined by the alternation of chromatic scales, can be found in the structure of music that has always interested Vanni.
This was particularly present at that time from what he was learning from the conversations with Maestro Arturo Toscanini, with whom he spent most of the free time from his studies.
