This work denotes the characteristic way in which Vanni oscillates between contradictory dualism and unifying synthesis. After the extreme contrasts of the last Greek paintings, he wants to bring back an integration between the various components of the painting. To achieve this, he accentuated the gestural strokes, creating a more convulsive composition where light and dark overlap in an indissoluble knot. He further brings the planes closer together with colored glazings on the white texture, darkening it until the line of demarcation with the black shapes disappears.
