Basic Requirement and Routes In
Medical schools are able to set their own entry requirements. Generally, the minimum entry requirements to standard entry medicine are three As at A level or equivalent qualifications. One subject, sometimes two, must be in a lab-based science (this means chemistry or biology) and some medical schools also require maths or physics at A level. Grades at GCSE or equivalent are usually considered as part of the application, but medical schools place varying emphasis on them.
UCAS
Standard Entry Medicine THIS WOULD BE THE ONE FOR NIAMHY TO DO
This is usually five years long, but in some institutions, it is six. It can have different abbreviations, such as MBBS or MBChB, but
all result in the bachelor’s degree in medicine.
Graduate Entry Medicine MUCH TOO LONG
This is open to application from those who already have a bachelor’s degree. Many universities accept a degree in any subject, but some require the previous degree to be science- or health-related. It is a four- year accelerated degree in most cases, but in
some universities, it is a five-year course. It is also known as the Graduate Entry Programme. 2
