If this manner was honed by experience,
the foundation was established early on. “My mother,” he acknowledges, “was the quiet one, and taught me to lead more by
action than by words.” It is fitting, then, that this Franciscan example of selfless giving and support for others continues through the Arlene & Charles Carroll Scholarship, a gift endowed in large part by Brother Tom and his sister, Maura Carroll. The award, in his eyes, embodies the very lessons that he has tried to live by and which have come to define his legacy.
“So many people have contributed to the scholarship. And that’s because the kids need it,” he adds. In the words of Saint Francis, “For it is in giving that we receive,” Brother Tom recognizes the beauty that lies within the spirit of generosity. His hope
is that current and future Bruins will continue to benefit from the gift of a Catholic education and an acknowledgement of their roles as part of a community of followers willing to help others to
“get it done.”
Recalling those early days of his time at Padua, Brother Tom muses, “There’s always hope. There’s always something there – or someone – and we learn from others to be hopeful and hope-filled. We don’t do it by ourselves.”
FOREVER FRIAR
SCHOLARSHIP
Since 1961,
Padua Franciscan
High School has been blessed
with friars who were leaders in faith, academics, athletics, fine arts, and everything in between. The Forever Friar Scholarship is in gratitude to all the friars who have been called to serve at Padua. Established in April of 2021 in honor of Fr. Allan DaCorte, OFM and Br. Tom Carroll, OFM, the scholarship began with a $100,000 corpus from donations made during the Bruin Benefit Celebrazione. All funds raised will go toward growing the endowed scholarship to provide financial aid to families in need. There is no better way to show your appreciation to all of the friars — past, present, and future!
