Sun, sand, and surf entices the whole family!
                               410-641-1441
Assateague is a 37-miles long barrier island managed in
partnership by the National Park Service, Assateague State Park, and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. It has wonderful
sandy beaches suitable for swimming, kayaking, etc. Park entrance fees range from $3 individual fee to $15 vehicle for a 7-day pass. The facilities are limited, but do include snack bars, bathhouses, visitor centers, and campsites. These wild, peaceful, windswept
beaches are perfect for relaxing or exploring nature. (See more about Assateague Island on page 6.)
Fenwick Island State Beach
302-227-2800
Situated between the popular resort towns of Bethany Beach to the north and Fenwick Island and Ocean City to the south, Fenwick Island State Park is a relaxing escape from the summer crowds. This three-mile stretch of Barrier Island is a playground of sand, surf, and sun along Delaware’s Atlantic coast and invites visitors to enjoy 344 acres of peaceful ocean and bay shoreline.
The white sand beaches gradually slope into the Atlantic, creating a broad swimming area. Lifeguards patrol the swimming beach daily from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, 9 am to 5 pm. During the summer months, umbrellas, chairs, and rafts may be rented on the beach.
Surfers can catch the big waves at Fenwick Island, as the park has one of the few beaches in Delaware with a designated surfing area. The beaches are also a favorite spot for surf fishing. Three dune crossings provide fishing access for vehicles with the proper permit. Surf fishing vehicle permits may be purchased at the bathhouse gift shop during the summer or at the nearby park office at Delaware Seashore State Park.
Ocean City
800-OC-OCEAN
Ocean City is “The East Coast’s Number One Family Resort,” with activities and events that appeal to all ages. Fun year-round with ten-miles of clean, sandy beaches open to the public from 6 am to 10 pm. Perfect for relaxing, swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, fishing, jet skiing, parasailing, canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving, and more! Two block-long designated “surfing only beaches” rotate daily. You can rent a variety of equipment from beach chairs to jet skis, wave runners to surfboards, etc. from vendors right on or near the boardwalk or beaches.
                                                                                    Beach Safety
The beach stretches for ten-miles and has
lifeguards posted every block the entire length.
Lifeguards are on duty daily in the summer from
10 am–5:30 pm. For your safety, always swim
near a lifeguard. If a riptide carries you away
from shore, DO NOT attempt to swim directly
against it to return to the beach. Instead, swim
parallel or along the beach until you notice
that the rip is dissipating and releasing its
grip. Then, head straight for the beach. If surf
is present, keep your feet up and swim along
with the tumbling water. You may take a bit
of pounding, but waves can be your friends, their power
washes driftwood in, and it can help wash you into safety as well.
