World War II Observation Towers

One of the tall World War II-era concrete observation towers familiar along Delaware’s coast. From the top, you can see much of the area’s Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean coastline, and on a clear day, Cape May, New Jersey.

Exhibits depict the history of Sussex County. The museum building is adapted from the old town hall in Hoorn, Holland. It was built in 1931 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the first European settlement in Delaware.

The museum includes a collection of historic buildings and horse-drawn carriages. The most priceless aspect of the museum are
the thousands of photographs, newspaper clippings, books, and other memorabilia about Georgetown.
The collection includes two-barrel roof barns, a 100-year-old church, a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, two old railroad freight buildings, a dining room with kitchen, storage buildings, and an office.
The museum was the life’s love of Nutter D. Marvel, local entrepreneur, horseman, and legislator, until his passing in 1988. It was gifted in 1992 to the Town of Georgetown by his grandchildren to preserve his legacy and as a depository of the Town’s history.
