In 1859, Fenwick Island’s picturesque 87 foot tall
lighthouse was completed and cast its first light over the dangerous shoals. First lit by whale oil, it’s now powered by an electric 25,000-candlepower light, which flashes white every 3 seconds and is visible 15-miles
out at sea.

vault and antique teller cages, and the museum displays exhibits and memorabilia from the area.

Julia A. Purnell was a wife and mother of two sons from Snow Hill, Maryland. Her artistic works in cross-stitch, quilts, and embroidery won state prizes and she was included in the National Hobby Hall of Fame. In 1891 Julia’s son William helped start the museum, which has since displayed and celebrated her works as well as the works of other accomplished women in the area.

This one room edifice was used as a school from 1869–1931 in the Furnace Town Village. Guests today may feel as if transported to America’s early days when quill pens, inkwells, and slates were a daily necessity.
