Since the early days of the railroad, Cedar City has been known as “The Gateway to the National Parks.” The wonders of Zion, Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks, and more are easily reached from this central location.

Bryce Canyon is famous for its unique geology, consisting of a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved from the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah. The Park’s exquisite erosion-carved pinnacles and spires, known as “hoodoos,” are tinted with rich warm hues of red, pink, and orange.

Resting on top of the Colorado plateau, at over 10,350 ft. in elevation, this breathtaking view awaits. Millions of years of sedimentation, uplift, and erosion are carving out a giant amphitheater that spans some 3-miles, and is more than 2,500 ft. deep. From sunrise to sunset, in blazing sun or cloudy skies, the rocks of Cedar Breaks display a rainbow of warm hues.

Protected within the park’s 229 square miles is a dramatic landscape of sculptured canyons and soaring cliffs. Zion is located at the junction of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert provinces. This unique geography and the variety of life zones within the park, make Zion significant as a place of unusual plant and animal diversity.

Kolob Canyon is located along the western edge
of Zion National Park. Kolob, from Mormon scripture meaning the star nearest the throne of God, was made a National Monument in 1937 and incorporated into Zion in 1956. A 5-mile scenic drive climbs past the towering red cliffs of the Kolob finger canyons and provides access to three maintained trails and views of wildlife. Kolob Canyon will be closed starting May 1, 2018 for seven months for a construction project. Visitors can still access the La Verkin Creek Trail and hike the Kolob Arch via the Hop Valley Trail. The Hop Valley Trail is accessed from the Kolob Terrace Road.
