Mason-Dixon Marker
Route 54, Mardela Springs
The famous Mason-Dixon Line that came to symbolize the entire border between slave and free states is designated with stone markers. The Mason-Dixon Line was set in October 1767, by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon of the Royal Society.

Built in 1741 on a 1,000-acre plantation by Isaac and Anne Handy. This early 18th- century house museum provides a step
back in time to learn of colonial life as lived on the Lower Eastern shore or the Chesa- peake. Handy was a ship-owner, a founder of Salisbury, Colonel in the militia, member of the Assembly, and Justice of the Peace. The house is fully restored to period, furnished and interpreted by the Pemberton Hall Foundation, Inc. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designed
a Chesapeake Gateway Site by the National Park Service. Outstanding features include paint hues throughout, walk in fireplace in the Great Room, built in-bed tester frames, gambrel roof, and brick construction. Many components of the early plantation are intact or have been reconstructed on site based on extensive research and archaeol- ogy. Scheduled open hours, plus group tours

Built in 1795 on a plantation outside of Salis- bury, this grand “Federal Style Mansion” is an architectural jewel. The Poplar Hill Mansion is filled with antiques and reproductions. They offer quaint tea parties throughout the year and two exhibits featuring Dr. Huston’s Surgery Room and the Keeping Room. Ad- mission is free on Sundays from 1pm–4pm and tours can be scheduled on other days for a small fee. Please call ahead for availabil- ity and try to make reservations at least 24 hours prior to visiting.
