Delmarva Shorebirds
The award-wining Delmarva Shorebirds, Salisbury’s own minor league baseball team, began as the Albany (GA) Polecats and was acquired by Maryland Baseball
in 1995, who then relocated them to the Eastern Shore. A “Name the Team” contest resulted in over 4,000 entries, 178 of which suggested the name “Shorebirds.” Frank Perdue donated the land for a new stadium. He also contributed $4 million toward the construction of the stadium, which was built at a cost of $10 million. The sta- dium was named in honor of Arthur W. Perdue, Frank Perdue’s father and founder
of the Perdue Company. The first home game was played on April 17, 1996, with the Shorebirds defeating the Columbus Red Stixx 4–2 in front of a crowd of 5,787.
