Theropods only ate meat
Theropods like TYRANNOSAURUS, ALLOSAURUS or DAKOTARAPTOR were fearsome predators – meat-eating hunters with sharp teeth that could slice through flesh.
But one group of theropods – the therizinosaurs – lived a very different sort of life during the Cretaceous period.
Therizinosaurs confused palaeontologists when they were first discovered because of their bizarre bodies, but now we have a much better idea of what sort of animals they were.
ALXASAURUS was an early member of this group of dinosaurs. Like other therizinosauroids, it had wide hips which held up a big pot belly. This big belly held a large stomach that broke down their favourite vegetarian foods.
BEIPIAOSAURUS was one of the smallest therizinosauroids.
It probably ate plants as well and, like many other theropods, was covered in fluffy down.
THERIZINOSAURUS was one of the largest ever theropods. Its huge claws would have been useful for grasping leaves and, millions of years later, the giant ground sloths would evolve to live and eat in a very similar way.
Although people originally thought these were monstrous animals, slowly palaeontologists have pieced together an odd collection of animals – vegetarian, pot-bellied, long-armed, fluffy giants.
NEIMONGOSAURUS’ teeth were very different from those of meat-eating theropods. The teeth in its lower jaw had jagged edges like a saw, and would have been great for biting and eating plants.
