Teeny TINY traces of other ancient chemicals can still be found in extremely rare cases. In fact, just a few years ago a team of scientists discovered fossilised dinosaur blood! They had placed some dinosaur bone under an amazingly high-powered microscope for a totally different reason and then spotted it by accident!
Some palaeontologists think they have found other chemicals in dinosaur bones too, like small amounts of collagen (which helps build muscles and other parts of the body) in the sauropod LUFENGOSAURUS, which lived 195 million years ago! That’s older than anyone thought microscopic soft things could possibly last for.
So, although scientists can't bring back a whole dinosaur, we can find out more secrets about them by discovering ancient chemicals trapped in fossils . . . and maybe build a chicken that at least looks like a dinosaur!
