“And I’ll tell thee how us’ll do it. We’ll bring him here an’ show him everything. Can we?” Dickon laughed and nodded.
When she got back, Colin wanted to know all about Dickon’s shaggy moor pony with its nuzzling velvet nose. “Does Jump really understand everything Dickon says?”
“Dickon says any creature will understand if you’re true friends with it.”
“I wish I was friends with things,” said Colin. “I never had anything to be friends with, and I can’t bear people.”
“Can’t you bear me?” asked Mary.
“Oh yes. I like you. Did you used to hate people?”
Mary nodded thoughtfully. “Yes, before Mr Robin and Dickon
came along.”
Colin’s eyes filled with longing. “I don’t think I’d hate Dickon.” Mary was so nervous she caught hold of both his hands. “I’m glad
because . . . because . . . can I trust you, Colin, for certain sure?” “Yes! Oh, yes!”
“Well, Dickon is coming tomorrow to visit you.”
“Oh! Oh!”
“Wait. The rest is better. There is a door into the garden. I found it.”
Colin gasped. “Oh, Mary! Shall we see it one day?”
Mary took a deep breath. Then she told the whole, wonderful truth: that she had been inside the Secret Garden.
“I didn’t dare tell you before. But now it’s all right. I know I can trust you – for certain sure.”
