Noah.
“Other children have seen them!” The morning
air’s cold enough that she blows out dragon’s breath with her outrage. “What’s wrong with animals and flowers? What on earth makes him want to draw like this? Horrid video games?”
I make a definite shake of my head.
“Then who is filling his head with horror?” Mrs Hollowbread eyes me accusingly. As if I’m one of those sisters like Asha, who teases her twin brothers about nuclear war and alien invasions till they cry and tell on her. All I do is make Noah eat and wash, and wear underpants!
“He’s scaring the other children! Giving Edie Miller nightmares, her father says. About sea ghosts beneath his house!”
I take a step back like someone’s shoved me. My heart zips to race-car speed. “That’s not true.” It’s just my house’s voice; the sounds of the sea!
“Well, of course it’s not true!” Mrs Hollowbread almost shrieks. “I’ve made it very clear to Noah – ghosts do not exist – sea or otherwise!”
