Originally a small fishing village, Tokyo has grown to become the busy, colourful capital of Japan. A city of contrasts, with neon-lit glass skyscrapers next to ancient wooden shrines, Tokyo is now home to more people than any other city on Earth.
The huge Tokyo area is governed from here.
Japan has two major religions: Shintō and Buddhism. This is a Shintō shrine.
The busiest railway station in the world. Stations employ ‘pushers’, who literally push people on to crowded trains during rush hour.
People gather here for the cherry blossom festival every spring – there are more than 1,500 cherry trees.
The Emperor of Japan’s home. The palace stands in beautiful gardens, and includes
Edo Castle, first built in 1457.
In rush hour, 2,500 people might be crossing this road junction at any one time!
Inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, this tower was built in 1958. The top is slightly bent after an earthquake in 2011.
The highest mountain in Japan and an active volcano. Mount Fuji last erupted in 1707.
