This beautiful fortified palace complex included places for people to meet, palaces and spectacular gardens full of streams, pools and fountains.
Colourful patterned tiles and ornate plasterwork decorated the Alhambra, while roses, orange trees and myrtle hedges filled the courtyards and gardens with scent and colour.
Granada was part of the Islamic Empire that stretched across southern Spain. Muslim people of North African and Arab heritage had conquered most of Spain several hundred years earlier. The word granada is Spanish for ‘pomegranate’.
