An extraordinary city where people use a network of canals to travel instead of roads, Venice was built on over a hundred small islands linked by bridges in a beautiful Italian lagoon. A city so powerful it was once its own city state (or country), the ‘Republic of Venice’ built a mighty sea empire and became the most important trading port of its time.
Known to Venetians as the ‘Canalazzo’, this is the largest waterway through Venice.
This impressive palace was used by royals and other important people while they visited the city.
This part of the city was full of traders selling spices and fine fabrics. Fresh fruit and vegetables arrived by barge daily.
