3,000 years. Many different cities were built in the same area over the centuries. When each city was
captured or destroyed, a new city was built nearby. The Mughal capital of Shahjahanabad (today known as Old Delhi) was created around 1638-48
when Shah Jahān, the fifth Mughal emperor, decided to move the royal court from Agra. A huge building programme began. Just 10 years later,
the city stood ready to be occupied, with the impressive Red Fort standing guard over the streets of houses and shops.

The area around Chandni Chowk was full of crowded, narrow streets packed with shops selling everything from spices, textiles, carpets and jewellery, to leather shawls, quilts and paper. Customers would barter for the best price they could get.
Humayun’s Tomb was built in 1565 for the second Mughal emperor. Nizamuddin Dargah is one of the holiest places in Delhi.
Built in 1387. Some people call it the ‘Black Mosque.’
Five-storey tower built in 1193 to mark a victory of the Muslim sultans. It is
73 metres high, making it the tallest free-standing brick minaret in the world. Near the Qutb Minar is an
amazingly ancient iron pillar that dates back to the fourth century.
