Almost a century ago, New York City was busy getting taller. Business was booming and so was the population: every year, tens of thousands of people arrived from all over the world in search of a better life. Space was limited, so people started to build upwards instead of outwards. The incredible skyscrapers of New York changed the way that cities would be built forever.

Where people arriving in America were registered, interviewed and examined to check they were healthy, before starting their new lives.
Originally called Longacre Square, it was renamed
after the New York Times newspaper in 1904.
A gift from the people of France, this symbol of freedom
has welcomed people to New York since 1886.
Many banks were built on and around Wall Street. New York was (and still is) America’s financial centre.
This area was full of crowded high-rise apartment blocks known as tenement
buildings. Many new
immigrants and their families lived in this area.
One of the world’s largest natural harbours, this was the perfect place for ships to unload goods and passengers from all over the world.
