Why should I come to Runshaw to study Chemistry?
A Level Chemistry provides skills that are of use in many areas of employment and is routinely required for progression onto numerous Higher Educational courses.
Our students have consistently achieved
A*-B grades above the national average
for Chemistry. Ofsted rated us as having ‘Outstanding’ teaching and learning. Our teachers are dynamic and highly committed
to your success. We have large, modern, well-equipped laboratories and all students are provided with a supportive study environment.
Enrichment takes various forms in Chemistry. We have competitions, trips, and talks by visiting speakers. We have also developed strong links with many top universities and throughout the course you will be given the opportunity to visit these universities to attend exciting lectures, practical sessions and open days.
What will I study?
There are three main areas of study:
• Organic Chemistry: the study of the compounds of carbon. These compounds are used to make a vast range of useful products – plastics, fuels, pharmaceuticals, food and all living things
• Physical Chemistry: the ‘hows and whys’ of chemistry, the study of reactions as a whole and how they behave
• Inorganic Chemistry: the chemistry of all
the elements in the periodic table, their reactions and the compounds that they form
How is the course assessed?
Two written theory examinations are carried out at the end of Year 1, and two written theory examinations are carried out at the end of the second year which cover the whole two years for the A Level qualification. The practical aspects of both courses are examined by written theory papers.
