Why should I come to Runshaw to study Media Studies?
Students choose Media Studies for a number of reasons: some may wish to follow a media- related career path at university or through an apprentice scheme, others may have a keen interest in one or more aspects of the modern media and have a curiosity as to how it works. Media Studies will also provide you with an opportunity to engage in practical production work and will broaden your knowledge
and understanding of the contemporary media and its importance in our culture.
Our teaching teams are led by published writers and examiners who in 2018 helped our students achieve a superb 100% pass rate and 69% A*-B grades with much
of the students’ work regularly being assessed as the best in the country.
In addition, fantastic enrichment activities will be available to you through visits and trips as well as an opportunity to work with the British Youth Film Association on major projects.
You can also progress onto a wide range of related courses at university, such as practical media courses, and theoretical media courses. Equally, Media Studies is excellent preparation for courses in English, Cultural Studies, Film Studies, Marketing and Promotion and other Humanities and Business-related courses.
What will I study?
The first year focuses on introducing you to the main issues impacting on contemporary media. You will look at the production of media products and how audiences access and engage with it. Media Studies looks at the relationships between the traditional media (film, television, newspapers etc) and e-media, and you will participate in the close study of
a number of media products. You will also
be supported in developing your practical production skills during this first year of study.
The second year allows you to investigate more advanced conceptual issues and develop your analysis skills. This will allow you to understand the way the media is part of our culture and the political and social impact it has. You will also work on creating your own media products.
How is the course assessed?
All assessments take place at the end of the second year. 70% of the marks are based on a written examination and 30% on the completion of a practical production task.
