WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE: LUFC SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT
Bristol City 1- 3 Leeds United
August 4,2019
With play-off heartbreak to Derby County
fresh in the memory, Leeds United started the
new Championship season at Ashton Gate.
Pablo Hernandez fired into the top corner
and suddenly all was well in the world again.
United were on their way...
Leeds United 4-0 Middlesbrough
November 30,2019
Ups and downs followed. An undeserved
defeat at Millwall was met with two late
winners inside four days on the road at
Luton Town and Reading. Leeds then hosted
Middlesbrough and put the Teessiders to the
sword with Mateusz Klich scoring the pick of
the goals.
Nottingham Forest 2-0 Leeds United
February 8,2020
Marcelo Bielsa's side left the City Ground
dejected. The Whites had claimed just two
wins in 10 games since the defeat to the
Bluebirds and saw a huge lead slip in the
promotion race. Luke Ayling fronted up post
match and called out himself and his team
mates.
Leeds United 2-0 Huddersfield Town
March 7,2020
The point against the Bees sparked a stunning
run of form. Leeds won five games in a
row, which culminated in a win over West
Yorkshire neighbours Huddersfield as Luke
Ayling thundered home a stunning strike. The
season was to be suspended after due to the
coronavirus pandemic.
Blackburn 1-3 Leeds United
July 4,2020
A win over the Cottagers brought a
disappointing draw with Luton Town in the
midweek after. Leeds travelled to Blackburn
Rovers in a tricky away clash. United, though,
saw off their Lancashire counterparts in
style as Kalvin Phillips crashed home an inch-
perfect free-kick.
Swansea City 0-1 Leeds United
July 12,2020
Brentford's winning run in third place had
continued and Leeds knew that the Liberty
Stadium was the toughest of their remaining
fixtures. The pressure was on, and El Mago
delivered - in the 89th minute. The goal took
Leeds six points clear in the automatic spots
with three to play. A huge moment, which
sparked wild celebrations.
Promotion
July 18,2020
West Brom and Brentford had to win to
keep United's Championship status - it was
the Baggies who blinked first. A 2-1 defeat
to Huddersfield meant 16 years of hurt was
brought to an end. Celebrations across the
city and up and down the country followed.
They were champions less than 24 hours later
Leeds United 1-0 West Brom
October 1,2019
The foundations were being laid. After
another strong start to the season United
welcomed the Baggies to Elland Road. Leeds
took control of the promotion race thanks to a
hard-fought 1-0 win as Gianni Alioski struck.
Leeds United 3-3 Cardiff City
December 14,2019
A result that sent shock waves through
the Championship. Leeds were 3-0 up and
cruising after an hour but left Elland Road
with just a point. United's late capitulation
signalled a serious downturn in form over the
Christmas and new year period.
Brentford 1-1 Leeds United
February 11,2020
Just days after the defeat at Nottingham
Forest, Leeds travelled to the capital. With
Brentford breathing down their necks United
needed a performance - and they got one.
After an early setback due to a slip from Kiko
Casilla, Liam Cooper scoring. United should’ve
won the game, but it showed they had the
fight.
Leeds United 3-0 Fulham
June 27,2020
After over three months without kicking a ball
Leeds restarted the season with a defeat to
Cardiff City. United welcome Fulham - who
were looking to close the gap to the automatic
places - in a pivotal clash. What followed
was a Marcelo Bielsa masterclass in game
management.
Leeds United 5-0 Stoke City
July 9,2020
Having watched everyone else in the
promotion race ahead of their next outing
the pressure was really on Marcelo Bielsa's
side to deliver. Leeds duly obliged, and sent
the Potters home with a good old fashioned
pasting.
Leeds United 1-0 Barnsley
July 16,2020
Leeds knew a win would take them within a
point of promotion. Bielsa's men, though, were
outplayed by their relegation-threatened
Yorkshire rivals and had to fight for every
single minute. An own goal decided it, but
Leeds knew they had been in a contest - the
celebrations post-match said as much.
Trophy lift
July 22,2020
Twenty-eight years since the last time Leeds
lifted a trophy and Liam Cooper had the
honour once again. United cruised to victories
in their final two outings of the season against
Derby and Charlton. All that was left was for
the champions to be crowned. Next stop...
as the Bees dropped more points.
