A Family of Artists THE DE MORGAN COLLECTION
All Saints Church, Cawthorne
In the 1870s Walter Spencer-Stanhope of Cannon Hall and his brother, John Roddam, designed and funded the refurbishment
of the local church in the nearby village of Cawthorne. They dedicated this work to the memory of their parents, John and Elizabeth Spencer-Stanhope who both died in 1873. Their niece Evelyn De Morgan also contributed to the work by painting four decorative panels depicting the four Evangelists; Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Roddam engaged the Gothic Revival architect G F Bodley to undertake the work. This included a new roof in an unusual waggon-headed design, a new pulpit, organ case and decorative panels. Roddam himself designed the figures of Faith, Hope and Charity in the West Window and painted the pulpit showing Christ in his Glory flanked by angels.
Whether Evelyn's painted panels were part of the original design or an afterthought is unclear. Whilst the main refurbishment was completed by 1880, the panels were not installed until Christmas 1883 when they were placed either side of the communion table.
