CORONAVIRUS
| MARCH 2020 | Coronavirus COVID-19 | THE BEST WAYS TO PROTECT YOURSELF
Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly, using soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water aren’t available.
‣ Cough or sneeze into a tissue or flexed elbow, then throw the tissue in the trash. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
‣ Avoid close contact with people who are sick, sneezing or coughing.
‣ Stay home when you are ill.
‣ Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that people frequently touch. Only wear a face mask if
you have respiratory symptoms or are caring for someone with respiratory symptoms.
The Centers for Disease Control says that unexpired household bleach is an effective household cleaner for coronaviruses when it’s properly diluted — which is four teaspoons of bleach per quart of water. You can safely use bleach to clean frequently touched surfaces, such as tables, doorknobs, light switches and faucets — but don’t spray it on your skin or inhale it.
The WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) says spraying chlorine all over your body will not kill viruses that have already entered your body and can be harmful to mucous membranes in your eyes and mouth.
CDC RECOMMENDATIONS
Individuals and communities should familiarize themselves with recommendations to protect themselves and their communities from getting and spreading respiratory illnesses like COVID-19.
• Older people and people with severe chronic conditions should take special precautions because they are at higher risk of developing serious COVID-19 illness.
• Watch for Symptoms. Factors to consider in addition to clinical symptoms may include:
• Has there been recent travel from an affected area?
• Has there been in close contact with someone with COVID-19 or with patients with pneumonia of unknown cause?
• Do you work in an area where there has been community spread of COVID-19?
