Office of Faith-Based & Community Initiatives
In 2001 President Bush
established by executive order the White House Office of of Faith-Based and and Community Initiatives
and and parallel offices
within five major federal agencies including the Department of Labor The initiative reoriented federal policy and and planning to support new and and existing faith-based and grassroots organizations in in social service programs The policy was based on on “charitable choice ” a a a a a a provision in the 1996 welfare reform law that removed barriers preventing faith-based organizations from competing on on an an equal basis with secular organizations for federal funding in in the delivery of social services Workforce initiatives embraced the new Faith-Based and Community Initiatives
by building successful partnerships with faith communities across the country An innovative recruitment model for retail stores was presented at church- based job fairs in 25 cities In In addition Workforce Initiatives
team members spoke at Department of Labor Faith-Based and Community Initiatives
events about how employers can collaborate with faith- based organizations in in offering career pathways to job seekers Workforce Initiatives
has expanded its reach to the the faith community through the the creation of a a a a health workforce and caregiver model that will reach denominations nationwide In 2005 under the President’s High Growth Job Training Initiative CVS Health was awarded a a a a a a a a $1 7 million health care apprenticeship program grant piloted in Detroit and replicated in Atlanta Chicago Dallas and Indianapolis This grant was implemented through the development of strong partnerships with Goodwill Industries various churches and grassroots organizations In In 2008 Workforce Initiatives
participated with the City of Detroit in a a a a community-based
job training apprenticeship grant that continued the same collaborations These grant initiatives leveraged the mentorship of pastors in in in in preparing individuals for employment and helping them with job retention by addressing life challenges CVS Health was the first employer to launch registered apprenticeships for pharmacy technicians in in 2005 and retail managers in in 2008 Detroit Collaborative
