LIVING THROUGH HISTORY...
LETTER FROM BOARD CHAIR
John Gardner, the founder of Common Cause, once said, “History never looks like history when you are living through it”. At the Museum of Boulder, 2019 was a year in which we were keenly aware of living through our own history. It was a series of successes, accomplishments, and challenges.
Our first wholly self-produced and mounted exhibits, “Pack it Up” and “Archive 75”, hosted record attendance and admission revenue. We conceived and executed thousands of hours of original educational,
historical, and cultural programming. Visitorship and membership increased to our highest levels ever.
In August, we were pleased to welcome our new Executive Director, Lori Preston. She has brought great management skill and energy and is leading our talented staff as a cohesive, high performance team. Together with our board of directors, she embarked on a long-range strategic planning initiative to be completed in 2020.
But there were challenges. Our fundraising efforts in 2019 fell short, putting our original plans for a dedicated, purpose-built children’s space, the “Children’s Discovery Zone”, on hold. While the momentum of paid admissions and memberships grew at a rapid pace, we ended the year in a greater than planned deficit, and rededicated ourselves to the goal of financial sustainability.
We are keenly aware of living through our own history as an organization and use the catch phrase “history happens here”. We count on you, our members, to help us fulfill that promise for our Museum’s and our community’s future.
