Using Open Questions Effectively
Good coaches know how to use open-ended questions to accurately assess the ability and attitude of their team. Asking quality questions can assist you and your team in better understanding the issues, the underlying causes and the development opportunities.
Open-ended questions require more interaction and communication around expectations, required experience, motivation and other readiness issues. Open- ended questions frequently begin with “how”, “what” and “tell me”.
Some sample Coaching questions include:
Describe to me...
• Your most relevant experiences.
• Your understanding of your role in performing the role and responsibilities.
• Your reactions to performing the role and responsibilities.
Tell me about ...
• How you would get started.
• Your past experiences in projects of this type.
• How you would prioritize the work.
What do you see as...
• The critical components of the role and responsibilities.
• The major obstacles to accomplishing this task.
• My expectations of you performing the role and responsibilities.
How do you feel about...
• The amount of responsibility you have.
• The difficulty of the role and responsibilities.
• The amount of coaching you can expect from me.
• Your growth opportunities from performing the role and responsibilities.
