• Brings discussions back on topic and uses paraphrasing techniques to properly define issues and ensure everyone is on the same page.
• If this type of behaviour is not immediately noticed within the group, the Team Leader should assume this role, as it is important to ensure that everyone remains on topic.
The Summarizer
• Collects different thoughts and ideas being discussed, and summarizes them in an easy to understand format.
• Ideal if the Presenter or the person taking meeting notes does this. If not, the Team Leader should assist in this important function.
The Co-Determination Tester
• Tests for the decision readiness, drawing possible conclusions and thinking ahead while the group is dealing with issues in immediate terms.
• This person may also demonstrate the behaviours of an idea generator, yet is also prone to jumping to conclusions and focusing on solutions instead of causes.
Relationship Oriented Behaviours
The Harmonizer
• The peacekeeper in the group uses a reconciliation approach or humour and
tends to mediate in times of disagreement. The Gate Keeper
• Concerned with the need for everyone to contribute and will often redirect questions back to those most silent within the group.
• This is an essential behaviour that the team leader usually assumes as it is critical to the progress of the team.
The Encourager
• The cheerleader in the group provides support to others and creates a positive environment.
• While this behaviour is important the Team Leader may need to re-focus this behaviour on the task at hand.
The Compromiser
• Promotes modifications of ideas, concepts, and views when particular ideas are seen to be in conflict with others.
• This individual displays a behaviour that is down to earth and may need to be encouraged to ‘think big’ if the need arises.
