Common Mistakes in Implementing Change Events
× Failure to deliver early, tangible results. Even if you hope to deliver a big bang result at the end, come up with a few early wins.
× Talking about breakthroughs while drowning in detail. Breakthroughs are often achieved by simplifying rather than complicating the way a team operates. Don’t drown potential breakthroughs in meticulous documentation and long meetings.
× Treating everything as a high priority. It is important to make some choices...you can’t do everything with the same zest and commitment.
× Using old performance measures which block change. Root out the old measures and bring in the new ones.
× The voice of the customer is absent. Systematically assess what the customer wants and trumpet the results.
× The voice of the employee is absent. Involving employees is time-consuming but it’s essential.
× Not making “What’s in it for me?” clear to everyone. It is hard to get buy-in when people are unsure of how the changes will affect them.
× Same old horses yield the same old glue! If you haven’t changed the team dynamics or the change team is filled with status quo types, not innovators, no one expects too much to change.
