 Scenarios for Discussion
Use the following scenarios for discussion to apply the leadership concepts and tools:
• What are the key leadership issues to consider in this situation?
• What actions would you take to resolve the situation?
• How will your actions build engagement and accountability?
1. ScottisaTeamLeaderinamanufacturingoperation.Everyweekhe schedules the production lines to optimize the equipment and determine how many people are needed. He thought this had been working quite well in the past but lately he’s getting pressured by his immediate managers to make sure his schedule meets customer demands during the busy season. At the same time, he’s getting more requests from his employees for days or half days off, sometimes they’re asking on short notice and he doesn’t have time to re-do the schedule. Scott used to work with many of these employees on the line and he wants to avoid having grievances issued against him. He’s not sure how he should handle this situation to meet everyone’s needs.
2. TaniaisthenewContinuousImprovementCoordinatoratanorganizationthat has not had this role before. She’s finding that people are not responsive to her during training sessions and when she goes to facilitate sessions in a department, people don’t provide any input. Making progress with teams is proving to be very difficult. She’s always been told she’s very much a people person so she doesn’t understand why she can’t make any headway. On top of this, she doesn’t have any direct reports (so people don’t HAVE to listen to her) and she doesn’t work in production (there appears to be a gap between office and production).
