Transform Your Center of Expense into a Center of
execution on a single, business-focused telecom management strategy will prevail.
Second, telecom management strategy must explicitly address how the xed and mobile telecom environment is utilized to drive bottom line business results. is is achieved through mining telecom environment transaction and usage data and then correlating it with business performance data. When this occurs, enterprises gain clear visibility into the business value of
the telecom environment and the practice of managing it.
A telecom management CoE is more than
a collection of activities – it’s a structure, a philosophy and business value accelerator. By adopting CoE principles and practices, technical, nancial and operational telecom management e ciency will be optimized and the CoE will extend its value beyond the telecom environment into the business by increasing business impact that delivers bottom line results. n

TExcellence he most well-known telecom management
practice today is telecom expense
management (TEM). Vendors are collectively shi ing the focus of TEM from pure expense management to telecom or technology or communications lifecycle management.
While focus on the lifecycle aspect of telecom management is a positive move for enterprises and vendors alike as it incorporates many aspects of managing all services and assets, the central value proposition of telecom management can be elevated when a Center of Excellence (CoE) approach is taken.
A CoE is a group or team that collaborates
and utilizes best practices around a speci c focus area or business practice to drive business results. Telecom management becomes a CoE when two fundamental principles of business acceleration are adopted.

Ask the Telecom Pro
Q: What is the standard bu er for an optimal wireless voice or data pooled plan?
A: The standard bu er is
10% above your average consumption rate over a three month rolling period and the bu er should be evaluated and adjusted
on a quarterly basis at minimum. While 10% is the standard bu er, be aware that this may or may not be best for your organization as some organizations require more or less to avoid overages. Also, consider that in some cases slight overage charges may be less expensive than paying for an unused bu er allotment.
In all cases, monthly tracking, trending and evaluation of usage against business requirements
is recommended to hone bu er values that are appropriate for your organization.
Q: Do carriers o er better than standard service level agreements for critical data services?
A: If your carrier is the provider of the underlying network services, then they likely o er
high availability services. These services are most commonly used in nance/banking, public safety and military/government applications that require more than standard reliability. These service levels are o ered for a premium fee, but if high availability is what’s required, the bene t should outweigh the added cost. Check with your carrier to determine speci c service levels designed to meet your needs.
