(GRANT fills up BASS’S cup) BASS
Where did I stop?
GRANT Jim Webb. Tell it from the top.
BASS
Yeah... well...old Webb was... one mean overseer back in the
day. After the war - he set out and became a foreman on a ranch for two men named Billy Washington and Dick McLish over here in Chicasaw Nation. Didn’t care for Negroes too much. Let it be known too. But was open to feed’n em... put’n em to work since the war ended and all. Negro preacher man named William Steward had a small ranch right beside em. Of course Negros having land was already a strike against ole Steward to Webb - but he let it go... until he started a small grass fire on his ranch and it got out of control and spread real fast over to the Washington-McLish land. Webb blew his top - went over and begin shout’n at the preacher man. That shout’n soon became scream’n and right after that the Preacher man felt a bullet go through his chest. Dead right there. I got the writ for his arrest. Week later... I get there `bout eight in the morning. You got Webb, man name Frank Smith and the cook watching me ride up. Now I ain't never seen Webb but I recognized him quickly from the description I was given back in Fort Smith. So I rode up looking like a drifter searching for work and food. I could see Webb was suspicious.
