SILAS
Not today. Left this morning before the storm hits.
(BASS takes a seat)
SILAS
Hey mister. Ain’t no since in take’n a squat there. That
old Tack was covered up for a reason. Ain’t been touched since I got here a year a go. I dont even think she wor....
Damn.
(He strokes the keys real hard. Begins to play a song and sing “ALL THE PRETTY LITTLE HORSES.” He ends - looks at his hands- wiggles them - feeling good about what he just played)
GRANT
SILAS
Damn is right. That old thing sounds good. You're hired.
(SILAS and GRANT share a laugh)
BASS
Ain't sat down to one of these beauties since before the war.
Slave name colfax showed me how to peck back on the plantation in Texas when I was a youngin.
(BASS pours himself another drink)
BASS
Said if I learned to make sounds on these black and whites it
will keep me out the fields couple days of the month. Few of us would sing and dance for the Mrs. and her guest every third Sunday afternoon.
(He drinks)
(THUNDER. LIGHTNING. SILAS runs to the swinging doors to sneak a peek)
SILAS
Rain coming soon. That’s how it all starts. Last time it
poured for five hours straight before that twister came.
