(LEVI doesn’t answer)
SILAS Going find your brother?
(LEVI gives him a pat on the back - then slowly exit through the doors. SILAS continues to look at his BAR in a horrible state. He leans over picking up a piece of SHINGLE)
BASS
Sorry about your place. Looks like your shingles didn't make
it again.
Two weeks pay.
SILAS
(BASS chuckles as SILAS tosses him his TRENCH JACKET from the floor)
SILAS Think he’ll find him?
Whats that? His brother.
BASS SILAS BASS
Dont know. Slavery has divided us all. Physically - mentally. Being sold, bought, families creating new families after separation. Accepting responsibility for children who were not even yours. Levi was willing to hang for what he thought was his brother’s ill-gotten gains. Frank wanting to find a way to keep the hounds from bite’n at his bones by becoming someone he wasn't to satisfy his hunger of wanting to be loved. Both dying on the inside - the scars of the past living right now in the present. Both wanting their ghost to live free. Just like the cowboys. Levi got a chance to make it right. If his brother is still out there somewhere alive. I was riding through Fort Smith few weeks back and stopped to watch a few children play a game. One would hide a switch - and the first child that found it - would whip the others with it. Made me think. Here we are - twenty-three years removed from slavery and were still enslaved. Right here.
(He places his finger on his temple)
