2022 PRESIDENT
MEETINGS, NETWORKING EVENTS & CREATING OPPORTUNITIES
How Your Association is Working for You
We are halfway through the year, and I am amazed at how fast the first seven months went by. I have had the privilege as your President to attend many local, state, and national meetings. Attending these leadership meetings has really opened my eyes to the incredible work our local Association does but also the hard work that our state and national associations do fighting for our members and industry. Molly and I just returned from the Sunbelt Builders Show in Dallas hosted by the Texas Association of Builders (TAB). We attended some great committee and board meetings.
There is a Local President’s Council that meets at each TAB meeting, and it is interesting to meet other presidents from across the state and listen to the challenges that they are facing in their markets and their associations. One of the things that I heard at the July President’s meeting along with the TAB Membership meeting is that Builder, Developer and Remodeler memberships are up across the state in our local associations and Associate membership is down. This is a trend across the state, and we have felt it in San Antonio too. With your help, we can reverse this trend. Please reach out to companies you do business with and encourage them to become a member. Not only will they be supporting the industry, they will have access to a wide network of business opportunities.
Prior to the TAB meetings in July, the Texas lieutenant governor and the speaker of the house released dozens of interim charges to the legislature. The TAB government relations team identified 22 charges of particular interest to the homebuilding and remodeling industry. These 22 charges are spread among seven Senate committees and 20 charges that 13 House committees will consider. GSABA’s First Vice President Shad Schmid, EVP Kristi Sutterfield, VP Haley King and many other GSABA members attended the government affairs and PAC meetings during the three-day event, and we are prepared to engage with our local elected officials, if needed.
We have several key events coming up that I want to invite you to participate in. This month we will host our Sporting Clay Tournament on Thursday, August 25th at 8:00am at the National Shooting Complex. This event is a lot of fun and chaired by Christian Finke with Builders FirstSource along with his awesome committee and sponsors. There are details on page 12 on how to enter or become a sponsor.
We also have the Saltwater Fishing Tournament scheduled for September 16th and 17th in Port Aransas, TX and this 2-day weekend event is chaired by Gilbert Sanchez and his posse of committee members who always knock it out of the park with the Friday night captain’s dinner,
MIKE SOWRY
Saturday’s one-day fishing tournament, and afternoon weigh-in and awards presentation. You can find out more on this fun and competitive tournament on page 23.
GSABA will host its ProAm Golf Tournament at the River Crossing Golf Club on Monday, September 26th starting at 8:00am. The tournament is presented in partnership with StrucSure Home Warranty and is chaired by Scott Whisenant and Grant Dodson. If you haven’t played in the tournament before, come and join us with your team of three and we will assign you a PRO to learn from and play with!
We really need your support of our Membership Drive that will be held at GSABA the first week of October. Call Haley King at 210-696-3800 for details and remember, you could win a new car at our GALA and Awards Banquet in December for recruiting new GSABA members! There will be more information in the September Builder Brief on our drive.
Your local Association has been hard at work this summer and recently hosted the Summit Awards at Pedrotti’s Ranch on Thursday, July 28th. It was an amazing event where we celebrated excellence in the homebuilding and remodeling industry. I want to congratulate all our award winners and extend a special thank you to our sponsors!
Thank you for your membership and for your continued support of the Association. Please call on me at anytime if I can be of service to you.
Sincerely,
8 AUGUST 2022 | GREATER SAN ANTONIO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
