PLEASE VOTE! SUPPORT
BEXAR COUNTY
PROPOSITIONS A & B
I know that many of you have heard the ongoing debate about Propositions
A and B. Bexar County voters will have an opportunity to weigh in on a major
redevelopment of the Spurs’ current Eastside home, listed on the ballot as
Proposition A, which would turn the Frost Bank Center, Freeman Coliseum,
and surrounding grounds into a year-round stock show and rodeo district.
Proposition B proposes to fund a downtown Spurs arena, and both
propositions would use the venue tax, which is expected to produce $503
million over the next 30 years if voters agree to extend an existing tax on
rental cars and increase the county’s hotel tax.
Here are the Core Reasons to Support both Propositions:
1. There is no burden on local homeowners or renters. The arena and
facility upgrades are not paid for by property taxes, city general
revenues, or sales taxes. The funding comes from visitor-based
revenue (hotel occupancy tax, rental car fees) paid for by tourists
and visitors, not residents.
2. These initiatives protect the existing city and county budgets. Both
propositions are structured so that city and county general funds
remain intact for essential services-housing, flood control, public
safety, and infrastructure.
3. This will bring economic growth, jobs, and opportunities to our
communities. The city and county expect the new development to
cost an estimated $1.5 billion, and this means construction jobs,
service sector jobs, hospitality, retail, and more. With increased
visitor traffic and local activity, Propositions A & B will help all types
and all sizes of businesses.
4. Stronger tourism and visitor ecosystem. A modern downtown arena
will attract concerts, sporting events, conventions, and cultural
events, and increase hotel stays, restaurant visits, retail traffic, and
spending in San Antonio. This will increase revenue for our city and
county and allow city and county officials to invest in infrastructure,
public safety, and make other improvements in our families’ quality
of life.
5. This is an investment in key community assets! Proposition A includes
funding to upgrade and expand the Freeman Coliseum, Frost Bank
Center, and the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo grounds. The San
Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo is a longstanding community tradition.
Growth here means more space to expand scholarships and youth
programming.
6. Opportunity and community pride. We need to let the nation know
that San Antonio is open for business and that we value being a
destination city. It will allow the city and county to upgrade our
infrastructure, attract investment in underserved areas, and create
much-needed jobs. Everyone will benefit, longtime local citizens to
J E F F K U W A M U R A
future citizens; everyone will share and benefit
from these important projects.
Not everyone loves change, but the proposals
are carefully structured, and risks are minimized.
The rewards for passing Propositions A & B will
be shared by all, and the projects are funded by
those using the facilities.
If San Antonio is going to compete with other
cities for convention business, we must keep
San Antonio competitive. It is important for our
small businesses as well as large businesses
that will benefit from the foot traffic downtown.
Please encourage your co-workers, families,
and neighbors to vote FOR Propositions A & B,
and please vote!
