EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
WE ARE BETTER TOGETHER
Consider Joining the Leadership Team
After more than a year of living with COVID-19, the Greater San Antonio Builders Association is open for business. GSABA’s Board of Directors has been meeting in person for the last quarter to take care of the Association’s business and needs. We have been able to meet with all social distancing protocols in place due to the size of the Ray Ellison Ballroom.
Your leadership team is seeking men and women who want to get involved and take on leadership roles at your Association for the next three years. We are asking for nominations (including self-nominations) for the upcoming Board of Directors election in September where we will elect four Builder members and two Associate members to three- year Board terms. These Board positions are incredibly important as we chart our course for the future. New board members will be installed at the GALA on Thursday, December 9th.
Your Executive Committee and Board members have led by example during the pandemic and have created new approaches, business models and experiences to meet the needs of our members in relevant and meaningful ways. We have seen greater productivity and productive conversations emerge during the pandemic. We have been able to connect with elected officials and government officials, and city staff both virtually and in-person for the past several months.
Earlier this year, the GSABA Board of Directors clearly defined our strategic goals for the upcoming year and built a consensus on our priorities. Government Affairs and Advocacy topped the list of our priorities along with membership networking and benefits. External and internal communications and education and training were top priorities too and it was noted that the Association has done an exceptional job with our government affairs initiatives, the Housing Forecast magazine, and the monthly Builder Brief. Education and training will ramp back up in September and we will co-host code classes with the City of San Antonio Development Services Department as they adopt the 2021 codes along with a contract class on September 14th for builders and remodelers that will cover how to handle material price increases and all changes that will go into effect September 1, 2021 and January 1, 2022 that were passed in Texas’ 87th Legislative Session.
You might be asking yourself if you have the time to commit to serve. President Ed Berlanga and Immediate Past President Jeff Czar made it a priority to conduct highly efficient meetings scheduled in advance to engage their fellow Board members and leave ample time for strategic discussion.
We invite you to attend a board meeting to see firsthand how important the members are in furthering the goals of the Association. Your contribution to GSABA’s culture, strategic focus, and financial sustainability is critical to our success. We will not meet in July and our next Board of Directors meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 17th
KRISTI SUTTERFIELD
at 11:30am. This meeting will be followed by a face-to-face meeting with our Government Affairs Chairs, Michael Shannon, GSABA members, along with the Development Services Department team at 1:30pm at the GSABA office.

In closing, we recently wrapped up the 2021 Parade of Homes in Belle Oaks with ten custom builders participating. We had over 8,000 people tour our Parade homes which tells me that people are more than ready for things to return to normal! I want to extend a sincere thank you to all 2021 Parade Builders, Developers Jay and Charlie Patterson with Belle Oaks, Randy Shirley and our volunteers and associate members who helped make it happen. We want to extend a special thank you to Dominick Alongi and Jason Edwards, the 2021 Parade Co-Chairs.
We hope to see you at the Summit Awards on Thursday, July 29th at the J.W. Marriott Hotel as we celebrate our award winners and the single-family construction industry! You can purchase your tickets online at www.sabuilders. com. Thereismoreinformationinthisedition of the Builder Brief on page 23.
