   EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
2024 IS HERE AND WE'RE READY TO HIT THE GROUND RUNNING!
As we look to the new year, I want to say thank you to our Immediate Past President, Shad Schmid, and our first family for an incredible year. I also want to give a warm welcome to our 2024 President, Tim Pruski, and his wife, Regina. Thispastyearwasmarkedbysomanyaccomplishmentsduetothe efforts of our leadership team and members.
Our members worked tirelessly on affordable housing initiatives, and we were activeinCityHallsacrossour22-countyarea. Wefacedseveralchallengesin 2023, from supply chain disruptions to the adoption of overreaching codes. Due to the work of many GSABA members, we had a seat at the table on key decisions being made by municipalities and counties.
We met with our members of Congress, engaged with our Texas Senators and House members often, and spent a lot of time on the local level working with key elected officials in San Antonio, Boerne, Castroville, Cibolo, Seguin along with County officials in Bexar, Guadalupe, Kendall, and Medina Counties. We hosted numerous fundraisers for pro-housing candidates and incumbents and had the most successful 3 PAC event last October with an outstanding turnout from the men and women who represent us in Washington, Austin, and locally.
We closed the year out with an amicable resolution to the enforcement of the labeling requirements for residential garage doors and successfully worked with the City of San Antonio to postpone this code requirement for additional testing and labeling for garage doors for permits filed starting on April1st,2024. Wewillbehostingacodeclassinthefirstquarterofthisyear, and we will cover garage door requirements, so stay tuned for more details.
Please join us for a fundraiser for Representative Liz Campos, a member of the Texas House of Representatives on Thursday, January 25th at 11:30am at Paesanos Restaurant across from the Association offices. There is not a charge for this luncheon – we ask that you bring a personal check for a campaign contribution made out to the Elizabeth “Liz” Campos Campaign. Not only does Representative Campos vote and fight for housing, but she alsoownsaplumbingcompanyandisaGSABAmember. Wesincerelyneed your support for this important event.
We grew our membership numbers in the second half of 2023, and I want to personally thank Randy Oliver with Hollywood Crawford Garage Doors & Openers for underwriting the 4-night cruise. I am excited to share that 2023 President Shad Schmid, Vice President Jeff Kuwamura, Associate Lifetime Achievement 2023 Award winner Gilbert Sanchez and newly installed Life Director Dominic Alongi all won the cruise for recruiting the most members.
I also want to thank the North Park Family of Dealers for supporting membership and partnering with us on a two-year car lease giveaway. Past President Mike Hollaway, an all-time high membership recruiter, won the grand prize for his efforts. Congratulations Mike!

We invested a lot of time into workforce development and our NAHB/GSABA Student Chapters at St. Phillips College and the University of Texas at San Antonio are thriving. We engaged with the Construction Careers Academy at Warren High School as well.
GSABA was recognized for our new Professional Women in Building Council (PWB) with an outstanding recruitment of 89 new members. We will host our first PWB Mixer on Thursday, January 11th,sopleasejoinus!

Lobbying Tax Deduction for 2024 TAB and NAHB Dues
In 1993, the U.S. Congress enacted the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act that contained provisions affecting trade associations. The Act provided that taxpayers will no longer be able to deduct from their federal income taxes any portion of the association dues, attributable to the association’s ‘lobbying activities’ as an ordinary and necessary cost of doing business.
For 2024, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) estimates that the non-deductible portion of national dues to be 16% or $198 which is $31.68 that we send to NAHB from the dues payment you make to GSABA. For the Texas Association of Builders (TAB) the non-deductible portion is 72% of $179 is $128.88.
Associations must inform members of the portion of their membership dues that are spent on lobbying activities. The Greater San Antonio Builders Association (GSABA) Builder duesinvestmentis$795andAssociateduesare$695. Please note that $160.56 of your due’s investment is not deductible as a business expense.
Significant taxes or penalties may be assessed by the IRS against associations that do not comply with this regulation. Dues payments to GSABA are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes, however, dues payments may be deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses subject to exclusion for lobbying activities.
