Representation as Activism
When television
intersectional representation, it generates awareness of differing experiences to broad audiences. People begin to understand identities and communities that they wouldn't normally have access to. This permits viewers to include individuals who have different experiences and appearances from them in their imagined communities. Intersectional representation also negates stereotypes that place certain groups into boxes. In the case of Captain Holt and Annalise Keating, they are not only black, but also queer. People have complex identities and characters should reflect those varying experiences. On a personal level, I hold up Rue Bennett as an archetype of positive, authentic, and intersectional representation. Zendaya's portrayal of Rue on HBO's Euphoria serves as the most authentic representation of mental illness that I have observed in my lifetime. It is the only show that accurately depicts life as an addict without demonizing nor romanticizing the illness.
