Case study: Latinx representation
Chico and the Man (1974)
Chico and the Man enforced harmful stereotypes of the Latinx community. Although the program marked the beginning of Latinx representation on television, its progress in history didn't further much from that. The prejudiced comments made by Ed Brown reflected the racially charged tensions of the time period.
Ugly Betty, starring America Ferrera, depicted more progressive representation of the Latinx community. However, the program failed to focus on Betty's ethnicity. In this way, the show progressed Latinx representation by gaining visibility in the industry. George Lopez was another key compenent of Latinx visbility on television by depicting normal, familial life and refuting stereotypes traditionally portrayed in the sitcom genre as displayed above.
Jane the Virgin (2014)
Ugly Betty (2006)
Debuting in 2014, Jane the Virgin provides the most authentic Latinx representation in its ability to accurately portray Latinx American citizens lives without their ethnicities dominating the narrative. The show is not simply about being Latina; rather, it displays meaningful archetypes of the Latinx community and serves to humanize immigrant stories in its each to broad audiences.
