TSports Preview Story by Danny Meza
he Edgewood Indians ended their 2017-18 school year on a good note from the sports side of things with an acceptable ninth place out of 16 in the first year as a Cape Coast
Conference school. Keep in mind that Edgewood does not have the opportunity to receive as many points as other schools as we do not have a football, wrestling, baseball or softball program. Edgewood still features an array of sports with swimming, girls’ volleyball, cross country, golf, soccer, basketball, track and field, lacrosse, and tennis. It is true that many of Edgewood’s teams came up just short last year; district runner-ups in girls lacrosse and girls soccer and Cape Coast Conference runner-ups in boys tennis, but there were also some fat dubs on the field. Starting with Theo Cox’s, 12, second place finish in the state for men’s singles in bowling, to District championships in boys tennis and Cape Coast Conference champs in girls soccer; Edgewood made itself known in our first year in the conference.
The start to this year’s sports has undoubtedly been bumpy.
With five losses in the first games of the season, the girls’ varsity
volleyball team is working out the kinks in their system of play.
With the storied Coach Wu at the head of the program, the team
is working hard to have a more successful season than last year’s.
Having a much younger team than last year’s, senior captains Emilee
Ford, Monika Guirguis, and Danielle Monteferrante are preparing
themselves for grueling and challenging matches. The Varsity team
this year, however, is composed of quite a few all-around players.
Piper Dowdell, 10, is taking charge on the court as a primary outside
hitter and a secondary setter. In short, with a united team effort and
an outstanding fan base at every game, you can expect our girls varsity volleyball team to be the successful underdogs in this year’s districts, regionals, and hopefully states.
Swimming, middle school basketball, golf, and cross-country also take place as fall sports and are well underway. Past seasons for these sports have ranged from mediocre to excellent, the latter yielding state- competition swimmers and divers, first place cross country finishes, and impressive basketball victories over larger middle and junior high schools. The golf team is bound to impress with leading senior Justin Lansing, 12, following in the footsteps of his older

brother.
With a new season on the horizon, our bowling
team is getting legs, arms, and fingers stretched and prepared for another state run. Already boasting a state runner-up title under his belt, varsity captain Cox spent the last two weeks of his summer preparing himself for another run at a champion season.
“I’m excited for the season, we have a solid team with a lot of talent and I’m hoping to get
