Cool in Schools
ATLANTIS ELEMENTARY
Adam Mallard, a parent and a member of Atlantis Elementary’s Dedicated Atlantis Dudes group, recently spearheaded a project by donating $10,000 worth of asphalt and the labor to re-pave the school’s blacktop through his company, VA Paving Inc.
In addition to helping Atlantis with this huge undertaking, Mallard and his team made the project a teachable moment by creating a video illustrating how asphalt is made.
The video was then shared with the Atlantis students on
the day of the paving.

“Mr. Mallard and his crew worked extremely hard to make
our court look brand new,” said Principal Cynthia Adams. “We appreciate their dedicated e ort and generosity to our school.”
COLUMBIA ELEMENTARY
Through a collaboration with the City of Palm Bay, Columbia Elementary students repurposed old campaign signs to create large self-portraits.
Under the guidance of art teacher, Kristina Latraverse, the school reached out to local candidates and Mayor William Capote to see if they’d like to donate their election signs to Columbia’s art program to be reused for projects. The request was welcomed and ful lled. The signs were then collected, cut, and primed by Latraverse.

“I am constantly nding new ways to integrate technology to extend and deepen my students’ learning,” said Crystal Rice, fourth grade teacher. “From whole group to small groups, the laptops have allowed me to see teaching and learning in a whole new way.”
MELBOURNE HIGH
With the help of art and facility department sta , Alexa Adams, a senior advanced placement (AP) art and International Baccalaureate (IB) student at Melbourne High, installed the
“I Am Not Your Label” project by hanging eighteen 3 feet by 6 feet black and white portraits of her peers on the walls of the school’s cafeteria.
To make her vision a reality, Adams drew inspiration from a global art initiative called the “Inside Out People’s Art Project,” which originated from the artist JR and is a global participatory art project that gives everyone the opportunity to share their portraits and make a statement about what they believe. It is
a global platform for
people to share their
untold stories and
transform messages of
personal identity into
works of public art.
Eighteen Melbourne
High seniors
volunteered for Adams’
project/community
service e ort. The

and labeling people in

“Students used these signs to create large self-portraits on the canvas-like surface,” said Latraverse. “To accompany their work, each student wrote a blurb about what they hoped to become in the future.”
The student writings, along with their portraits, will be exhibited in an art show titled: Faces of Our Future.
JUPITER ELEMENTARY
Jupiter Elementary students and teachers are moving technology to a new level, as the school recently purchased 300 Lenovo laptops, through the Digital Classroom Plan grant, which has enabled 15 classrooms to provide every student in grades 2 through 5 with devices.
The grant has provided Jupiter Elementary with the opportunity to help build 1:1 technology ratio classrooms. Teachers are creating new lesson plans which incorporate the blended learning model, which aims to have students interact with their peers, the instructor, and with content through integration of online and face-to-face environments.
